Blood filtering , a certain specific type of plasmaphereses, greatly expands the pool of eligible donors for organ transplants, by removing the antigens, which attack foreign tissue. In the case of autoimmune disease, it can also remove the antigens (a molecule whose shape triggers the production of antibodies (immunoglobulins) that will bind to that antigen) attacking the patients own body. In transplant patients problems with rejection have also been reduced with concurrent use of splenectomies and use of immunosuppression drugs like tacrolimus, methylprednisolone, and cyclophosphamide.
