Vertebroplasty: When is it usedCompression fractures of the vertebrae can be extremely painful and debilitating. A compression fracture of the vertebra can cause the vertebral body to collapse and thus "compress". This condition is mostly commonly caused by osteoporosis and less often by tumor, or trauma. Sometimes multiple vertebrae may be involved. Thoracic (chest) and lumbar (lower) spine (the vertebrae, where vertebroplasty is most commonly performed) are most commonly affected by osteoporosis with pain increasing with walking. Vertebroplasty: Symptoms and DiagnosisSymptoms of compression fractures are persistent pain and reduced mobility. However, only x-rays, CTs or MRIs can distinguish the pain caused by fracture from the pain caused by degenerative disc disease. Vertebroplasty: ProcedureThe Vertebroplasty procedure begins with the patient lying on his/her stomach. A local anesthesia with light sedation is used. After a small incision is made with the guidance of fluoroscope, a needle is inserted near the spine. Here bone cement is injected. The small incision is covered only with a bandage. Vertebroplasty: PostopThe entire procedure takes from 1-2 hours (depending on how many vertebrae are treated). The patient is required to remain for observation for one to two hours. Typically, patients are released to go home and resume normal activities within 1-2 days. In most cases, pain caused by vertebral compression fractures will be gone or diminished within 48 hours. You might experience some discomfort or bruising where the needle was inserted. Vertebroplasty: Advantages
