What is the Gastric Balloon?

The gastric balloon, sometimes called the intragastric balloon is a soft, silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile saline. This is a non-surgical procedure, done without general anethesia. The balloon is usually left in the stomach for six months and is sometimes done as preparation for other weight loss surgeries.

How does the Gastric Balloon work?

The gastric balloon should give you a feeling of fullness. The first week after the procedure, you will be on a liquid diet with instructions to drink plenty of fluids. Then you can begin a diet with solid food recommended by your doctor.

As with all weight loss surgery scheduled aftercare is required.

What are the Advantages of the Gastric Balloon?

• no surgical penetration of the skin
• no general anethesia given
• a feeling of fullnes reduces urges to eat
• immediate wieght loss begins

What are Contraindications for the Gastric Balloon?

• if you are under 18 years of age
• less than 25 pounds over your ideal weight
• unless you can comply with a serious, medically supervised program
• if you have a previous history of obstruction, adhesive peritonitis or a large hiatal hernia
• severe kidney, liver or lung disease
• long-term steroid treatment
• drug or alcohol addiction in the last 12 months
• if you are pregnant
